Zero the Hero

We like to learn about the base number 10 in Kindergarten by celebrating every 10th day of school until we get to 100. We do this with special activities, during math calendar time, and we get a visit from “Zero the Hero” who is just a stuffed teddy bear in our room. He brings us a little note and a surprise snack. I’m not sure if I have pictures of each 10th day activity, but as I find them I will put them on this page.

10th Day-I gave each child 10 counters and they hade to place them on their smiley faces on their sheet. Then as a group we counted from 1 to 10 and touched each counter while we counted.

20th Day

We each got 20 goldfish crackers and sorted them into groups of 5 on our recording sheet. Then we traced the number below the group and counted by 5’s to 20.

30th Day

We each got 30 fruit loops and put them on our 1st sheet (1 to 1 correspondence)-then we grouped them on our 2nd recording sheet in groups of 5, traced the number, and counted by 5’s to 30. Then, of course, we got to eat them! 🙂

Can you tell me what you did on all the Zero the Hero days? Do you have the sheets to print

I’m sorry it has taken me so long to answer you!! I am now teaching 6th grade and I have just sort of left my kinder stuff behind. Go to Martha Shehan’s kindergarten website-she has tons of Zero the Hero stuff for you to look at AND print!!

      Hope this helps you! 🙂

I have tried to print from Martha Shehan’s site but no luck! Did you save the zero the hero unit?
If so may I have a copy of the curriculum?

Daisha, I would live to help you, but I no longer teach K and don’t have any of those files. I’m sorry- I’m wondering if she took her site down?
